Rules
Object of Qualifying Round
To Race around Hamilton’s West end, collecting as many checkpoint stamps in their ‘Steel Town Amazing Race Passport’. Points will be awarded for each challenge, but be careful, point values are hidden, so teams must complete as many checkpoints as possible to gain as many points as possible in order to avoid elimination
The top 50 teams at the end of the qualifying round will move to the final leg of the race after lunch
Qualifying Point System
- Each checkpoint is worth a point value ranging from 10 to 100 points.
- Participants will be instructed to visit as many checkpoints as possible, collecting stamps in their passport as they go. Stamps will NOT be added to the passport until the team has completed each assigned task.
- Teams will be required to visit specific points as outlined on their route map. Failure to visit these could result in elimination if the team makes it to the top 50.
- Points can also be raised before the event start date by collecting pledges and completing E-mail Blast challenges which are sent out every Friday. Points will be awarded for pledges in the following manner:
- For every $100 in pledges raised above the required minimum, teams will receive a 100 point bonus
- $100 – $199.99 above minimum = 100 points
- $200 – $299.99 above minimum = 200 points
- $300 – $399.99 above minimum = 300 points
- $400 – $499.99 above minimum = 400 points
- $500 + above minimum = 500 points (and a free cab voucher to use in the race at your discretion)
Qualifying Round Elimination
- Each team will be instructed a 30 minute window in which teams MUST be back at the final checkpoint. Failure to arrive at the final checkpoint within that 30 min window, will result in elimination.
- There is a minimum point value that MUST be reached in order to have the chance to move to the final round of the race. This minimum point value does NOT guarantee placement in the final round if your team is not in the top 50 teams based on points collected
Determining the Top 50
- Only teams who have reached the minimum point values are eligible for the final race. The top 50 teams with the highest point values will move on to the final leg of the race
- In the case that there are more than 50 teams, or ties, teams will be eliminated through the following to determine the final 50 teams to move on:
- Teams that took the longest to complete the race will be eliminated
- Teams that raised the least amount of pledges will be eliminated
- Teams that did not visit all required checkpoints will be eliminated
Object of the Steel Town Amazing Race
To be the FIRST team to cross the finish line at the end of the second leg of the race. To RACE the town and STEEL the Glory, winning bragging rights as well as a prize awarded to the top 3 teams (Free team registration to any City Chase in Canada!)
How to Race
Qualifying Round
- Teams will collect necessary resources through a series of initial challenges. Using these resources, teams must find their way through a maze of checkpoints in order to collect points needed to qualify for the Final Race leg
Final Race Leg
- There is no map for this leg of the Steel Town Amazing Race. Teams will be given a starting clue and must use their wits and intellect to determine where they must race to in order to reach the next checkpoint. Watch out, if you do not finish first at each checkpoint, you COULD be eliminated on the spot!
- Each clue will contain information needed to move forward. It could be in the form of an address, or a riddle. Some clues will also contain specifications on how each team MUST travel to their next destination. Failure to follow this specification may lead to elimination from the race
Types of Checkpoints/ Route Markers
- Detour – Teams must decide between two different challenges to complete before moving on
- Yield – Allows one team to force another to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time
- Roadblock – A task that only one member of the team may perform
- Fast Forward – A team may skip the task and proceed directly to the next checkpoint
- Elimination – Certain checkpoints on the route will be designated elimination points. The last teams to arrive at these points will be eliminated from the race.
